3 Significant Writing Tips Authors Can Learn From Theater

A unique factor about the various creative mediums is that the take-aways from one medium can be used to improve one’s work in another.

One such creative medium that writers can look to for inspiration is the theater. Here are some of the ways theater can help you become a better writer.

The art of improvisation

Theater is all about doing plays on stage in front of a live audience. Hence, you encounter situations like actors forgetting their lines, props not working, or the sound and light effects going awry. The actors and the crew anticipate for things going wrong and are ready with improvisations. The same applies to writing, where bang in the middle of your story, you realize it is not taking the shape you expected. And you have to be ready to make the changes.

Feeding off of the audience’s energy

Live shows always feed off of their audience’s energy, and that contributes hugely to the success of any live show. Similarly, since the author is writing for an audience, it is best to test the waters by having your work reviewed by different people to get a feel of the audience’s reaction.

Dialogue breathes life into the characters

What the character has to say in a play and how the character responds to other people and situations help the audience understand their true persona. Same is true of the characters you are building in your story. Their dialogue should act as a window to their soul.
